Original Item: Only One Available. The early 20th Century involved a lot of large changes in the uniforms and headgear used by the German empire, as the older Dunkelblau (Dark Blue) uniform patterns were replaced in the field by the more subdued Feldgrau (Field gray). The colorful insignia and fancy dress uniforms were changed to much more utilitarian ones better suited for "modern" warfare.

An order from the high command dated April 19, 1907 announced the release of the new German Feldgrau (field-gray) uniform, known universally as the M1907/10 Feldbluse or Feldrock. The new uniform was intended for field use only, and the old Dunkelblau uniforms were maintained for all other occasions. The Feldrock was made of a material called Tuch, which was a heavy wool Feldgrau (green-grey) material. The new uniform was often piped in regiment or branch of service uniform colors, with colored piping sewn around the bottom edge of the collar, on the front fly, on the cuffs and flaps, and the rear skirt formation. Shoulder straps were a slip-on pattern and piped in Army corps colors or unit facing colors depending on the unit. As previously, the EM/NCO versions were somewhat more simplified, and overall piping was replaced later with only using shoulder and collar insignia.

This is a very nice example of an Imperial German M1907/10 Feldbluse Tunic, as issued by the Kindgom of Bavaria. Of all the states of the German Empire, Bavaria retained the most autonomy regarding uniforms and regimental designations. The tunic has the "Argent and Azure" (White and Blue) checkerboard trim on the front of the color, and the buttons are all the Bavarian "Two Tailed Crowned Lion".

The tunic features a 6 button front closure, with three hook and loop fasteners for the collar. The rear has a vent in the seat with two buttons at the top, and there are two pockets low on the front side. The ends of the sleeves feature long French cuffs, without any button closure. The interior is lined with off white fabric, and the left interior is stamped with a 1916 date over JR5, which would usually stand for the 5th Infantry Regiment. Under these are are most likely the measurements of the tunic:

94  43
41
82  69

The schulterklappen (shoulder straps) are the same field gray color as the rest of the uniform, without any piping, and each has a red chainstitched number 37 on it. We unfortunately have not been able to identify which exact unit they are from. Definitely some nice research potential here, as German WWI unit designations can often be very difficult to determine.

The uniform is in very good condition, especially considering its age and just how rare WWI Imperial German Feldgrau uniforms are. There is mothing and small nips here are there throughout the body of the uniform, with some old, very small, collector’s repairs in areas. Some of the nap of the fabric has worn away in areas, but overall it shows only light wear. Overall, a very attractive tunic that displays very nicely despite these slight drawbacks.

Imperial German Feldgrau uniforms are incredibly hard to find on the market today, both officer and enlisted. Aside from the attrition of clothing worn in the trenches, much was burned as a result of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic and lice infestations. What survived was either worn out by veterans who repurposed their old uniforms as everyday clothing following the bleak years during the massive depression that raged throughout Germany, or, was simply repurposed or converted for use with the Reichswehr.

An excellent addition to any First World War German Uniform collection!
